Welcome to HISTORIC SECORD HOUSE CIRCA 1782 in Niagara on the Lake Ontario
Canada |
General Description
Welcome to Historic Peter Secord House bed and breakfast, a Colonial American home, rich in history and comfort. Some information that you may find interesting is that the heritage home was built in 1782 by Laura Secord's uncle Peter and is situated in the historic hamlet of St. Davids, the hub of the Niagara area. The house is located close to the old town, Niagara Falls, St. Catharines and the International Border. During the War of 1812 the community changed hands many times and at each time of occupation the forces used the building as a field hospital. In 1814 the village was burned, historians note that the building was spared as it was a hospital for the troops. Typical of New Paltz, New York, Huguenot stone houses have simple lines, native stone and sound construction. It is the oldest loyalist building west of Montreal and the only one of its kind in Niagara.
Secord House is restored and offers guests comfortable, private accommodation with ensuite and all amenities. Breakfast is served in the Tavern room by candlelight and changes daily. Visitors enjoy the smell of freshly brewed coffee, homemade baking and delicious breakfast entrees. Relax in the Loyalist room which has the original fireplace, heartpine floors, windows, trim and the first french doors built in Upper Canada.
If you would like a glimpse into what life was like in a Colonial American home, in the days before Canada existed, read about us in the Toronto Star, Niagara-on-the-Lake section V, dated April 8, 2010, written by Christopher Hume, Architecture Critic.
There are lots of things to enjoy when you visit with us and our central location puts us in close proximity to the Shaw Theatres, golfing, antiquing, Fort George, Museums, Niagara Falls, shopping, hiking and biking trails, fine dining and wine tasting at more than 22 wineries within the town.
We strive to make your Niagara vacation as memorable as possible and welcome you with gracious hospitality and traditional sensibility.
