| "Historically Designated Secord House maintains the simplicity of Colonial life in the oldest Loyalist home in Niagara" |
Welcome to HISTORIC SECORD HOUSE CIRCA 1782 in Niagara on the Lake Ontario
Canada |
General Description
Welcome to Historic Secord House, a Colonial American home which pre-dates the War of 1812. The house was built in 1782 by Peter Secord, the first Loyalist farmer in Upper Canada. It is the oldest Loyalist home and the earliest surviving example of a Whirlpool sandstone building in Niagara.
Peter's house was used as a hospital during the war of 1812 and was spared during the burning of St. Davids in 1814. It is a remarkable piece of Canadian history.
The building served as an Inn in the 1800's and is believed to have hosted historic figures such as Major-General Sir Isaac Brock, Sir John Graves Simcoe, General Sir George Prevost, and heroine Laura Secord. Laura (Ingersoll)Secord was Peter's niece through marriage. Historically designated, the house remains largely intact containing many original and unique features. It is tastefully restored blending original Georgian architecture with modern comfort in a smoke free adult atmosphere. All guest rooms are spacious, decorated in the colonial period and well appointed with quality linens, ensuite bathroom, TV, A/C and sitting areas.
Awake in the morning to the inviting aromas of freshly baked scones and muffins which will beckon you to the dining room. A full course breakfast awaits including juices, hot beverages, fruit dish and main course.
At the end of a busy day guests are invited to relax in the Redcoat room which dates to the early 1800's. The comfortable setting is a tribute to Sir Isaac Brock and overlooks the hillside perennial gardens, where you are invited to tickle the ivories and ebonies of the baby grand piano. For your interest, historical artifacts from the War of 1812 and earlier are on display as well as lots of good reading material.
Anniversary, birthday or maybe just a much needed getaway, we would be happy to help you make plans for your day with dining reservations, wine touring and/or selecting a Shaw play. The Niagara area is amazing and our central location puts us in close proximity to several National Historic Sites including Fort George, Navy Hall, Brock's Monument, Laura Secord Homestead and MacKenzie Printery, Shaw Theatres, Niagara Parkway & Heritage Trail, Sir Adam Beck Generating Station, Welland Canal, Niagara Golf Courses, antiquing, museums, shopping, hiking and biking trails, fine dining, wine tasting at more than 30 wineries within the town and magnificent Niagara Falls.
We strive to make your Niagara vacation as memorable as possible and welcome you with gracious hospitality and traditional sensibility.
Over the next several years many special events are planned for the Niagara area celebrating the Bi-Centennial of the War of 1812 and we are thrilled to be part of it.
Please call (905)262-1030 or email historicsecordhouse.com for reservations. Complimentary wine tasting vouchers for several wineries are included.
